What is barley grass?

Most homes have barley grains in their pantries, but most probably not barley grass. Barley grass, or barley green as it is sometimes called, is the immature leaf blades of the barley plant. They have been around since about 9,000 years ago when it was first cultivated as food and medicine.

It was most likely the first cereal grain to have been domesticated by man. Ancient Asian, Middle Eastern and Greek cultures reportedly included barley grass in their diets. Infact, it is said that they used it to treat boils, gastrointestinal disorders, liver, skin and blood problems. They also utilised the grass to increase their strength and stamina.

Documents show the Egyptians thought barley was a gift from the gods so they revered it. Given that it can grow in most climatic condition, slowly, the proliferation of this vigorous annual monocot from the Poaceae family started to spread out all over the world.

It was featured in many Asian and Middle Eastern diets. When European explorers discovered it, they brought it back to Europe, cultivated it and where, until now, it continues to grow. It was the first crop to have been planted in 1611 in Virginia.

Today, the grains of barley are used in so many things: to make beer and incorporated in so many food products. Barley grass on the other hand is also gaining popularity as a leafy green vegetable and juice. Barley grass powder is also used as a supplement.
