Organic Madagascan Vanilla Powder

A world without vanilla is like a world without music, without sound. Cakes and cookies would be bland. Chocolates wouldn't be as richly-flavoured. Perfumes wouldn't be as sweet-smelling. It's the secret ingredient that makes so many products acquire that “little something”.

What is it?

Few people know where vanilla comes from, other than those small dark bottles in supermarkets. Vanilla comes from a herbaceous vine that belongs to the orchid family. It is the only orchid used for industrial food production. The vanilla plant, which can grow up to 30 feet long, bears trumpet-shaped flowers that turn into pods. These pods, which are often referred to as beans, have a pleasant fragrance. The vanilla bean has its roots in Mesoamerica and it was the Mayans who first utilised it to flavour chocolate drinks. This delicious bean started spreading to tropical regions, thanks to the European explorers who brought it there. By the mid-19th century, Mexico had become the main producer of vanilla, but then the French discovered a way to pollinate vanilla flowers by hand. This led to bigger vanilla plantations, now known as Ile de Bourbon, which eventually led to Bourbon vanilla. Today, there are three major cultivars of vanilla beans: Bourbon vanilla, Tahitian vanilla, and Mexican vanilla. Bourbon vanilla is produced on Bourbon Island in Madagascar, which is the top producer of vanilla today. It has a smooth, strong, full and assertive flavour. Tahitian vanilla has a more subtle flavour with a floral hint. Mexican vanilla (real pure Mexican vanilla, not the synthetic kind) has a sweet yet spicy aroma.

What are its nutritional content and health benefits?

Beyond the sweet scent and subtly powerful flavour of vanilla is something more substantial that a lot of people don’t know about. Vanilla has a great nutritional profile and a long list of health benefits to boot.

It contains lots of antioxidants. These are antioxidants that protect the body from toxins and free radical damage. The antioxidant properties of vanilla are especially high—approximately 90%—if the vanilla is unprocessed and concentrated.

It contains important minerals. Vanilla beans contain calcium, manganese, iron, and potassium, which contributes in controlling our blood pressure, red blood cells and haemoglobin.

It contains Vitamin B-complex. Vitamin B-6, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin and pantothenic acid can also be found in vanilla. This group of B-vitamins helps in the function of the nervous system, body’s metabolism, hormonal activity and psychological function.

What makes our Madagascan vanilla powder different?

Vanilla can be bought in many forms, one of which is a powder. There is no shortage of vanilla powder on the market today – in fact, it’s likely that you’ll find it in most supermarkets. The question is, where can you find a high-quality vanilla powder?

Some vanilla powder manufacturers use artificial vanillin obtained from a paper pulp by-product called lignin instead of using real vanilla beans. Some contain castoreum, which comes from the castor sacs of mature beavers. On labels, they only refer to it as a food additive or natural flavouring. It is estimated that 95% of vanilla products are artificially flavoured with lignin and castoreum.

Impact Foods offers vanilla powder made from pure, unadulterated vanilla extract. We don’t mix any additives, alcohol, artificial flavourings or artificial colours into our powder—it is only vanilla beans through and through.
We grow our vanilla plants in soils that are fertile and free of chemicals. No pesticides, herbicides or fungicides are used on the plants at any point throughout their growth, harvesting and processing. We have soil certification and the approval of EU organic certification bodies to prove this.
Aside from handpicking the beans that will be included in the processing, we also use a cold extraction process to carefully extract the aroma, flavour and nutrients from the beans.

The kind of beans planted and where they are grown play a huge part in producing a great-tasting vanilla powder. We grow our Bourbon vanilla in Madagascar, where the finest vanilla beans come from. The result is a vanilla powder with a creamy and velvety texture, a very rich and distinct flavour, and a naturally sweet taste.

Enjoy it in baked goods, an assortment of drinks and desserts, or in any recipe that requires pure vanilla.
