What are Acai Berries?
The acai berry has a large seed. It is covered by a thin layer of flesh and skin which makes up only 10% of its total weight.
For centuries, acai remained known only to the locals of the Amazonian region calling its fruit "içá-çai" or “the fruit that cries.” They used it as traditional food and mixed it with root vegetables to eat it as porridge.
But most importantly, the natives utilized this fruit as medicine to treat a wide range of ailments such as skin problems, ulcer, hemorrhage, and digestive issues like parasitic infections and diarrhea.
But the nutritional content and health benefits of acai remained popular only in South America, its reputation superseding that of milk.
What are the nutritional content and health benefits of acai?
When a medical practitioner discovered the fruit and was able to harness the berry’s nutrients into supplements, he introduced it to the western world. It was then that acai’s popularity became worldwide. Since then, countless of studies have been conducted to prove (or disprove) the health benefits of acai berries.
Packed with Antioxidants including Vitamin E It actually has over five times more antioxidants than other common berries, which also contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
30 times more Anthocyanin.Acai can provide as many as 30 times more anthocyanin compounds (resveratrol and ferulic acid) and flavonoids than a glass of red wine can.
Other minerals and Potassium. Acai berries also contain some good amount of minerals such as potassium, manganese, copper, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component that contributes to help maintain normal blood pressure, muscular and neeuroligcal function.
There is still much to know about acai, but it’s only a matter of time before the mysteries of this Amazonian berry are fully unraveled.
What makes our Acai different?
After harvest, the acai berries are taken downriver to be washed and carefully cleaned. Then, the pulp is extracted. Take note that acai has three grades according to the amount of acai fruit pulp it contains: popular, medio and especial.
The one with the most concentration of pulp, therefore the most pure, is special. After extracting the fruit pulp, we immediately pasteurize, let it undergo a process called freeze drying, where the products are first frozen down and using high pressure vacuum the frozen berries go from frozen to dry without them melting in between which retains the almost 100% of the nutrients.
Acai berries are highly perishable and while other companies delay and use preservatives to make up for it, our raw organic acai berries are processed within a 24-hour period so we don’t need to. Ones the acai has been made into a powder it is much more stable and has a shelf life 12-18months.
But our customers can tell the superiority of our product through its color and taste. Our organic freeze-dried acai powder has retained its natural deep and vibrant purple colour.
If you see other acai berry powder with a brown color, it is an indication that the acai has been over-processed by being heated to temperatures above 80°C. That means the acai’s inherent nutrients have most probably been already destroyed.
The taste of our acai berry powder is naturally pleasant like a combination of mixed berries and dark chocolate. We used no artificial flavors to enhance its taste.
Enjoy our premium organic acai powder and its health benefits (use about one to three teaspoons per day) in fruit juices, smoothies and other drinks, yoghurts, ice creams, energy bars, jellies and other raw food products.
