Ashwagandha Powder

There are many roads to health and wellness. Some take modern-day vitamins and pills to stay healthy and treat illnesses. Others take an entirely holistic approach.
In India for instance, they believe there is harmony between the spirit, mind and body. A disruption of this harmony is the prime reason behind all the illnesses we experience. To heal, treat acute conditions and live a long, healthy life, maintenance of the balance among the three must be achieved. The Indians call this holistic approach of healing Ayurveda medicine.
Ayurveda seeks the help of powerful herbs to achieve this harmony. One such herb they use is called ashwagandha. Those who have no access to this herb in fresh form use organic ashwagandha powder instead.

What is it?

This herb is from the nightshade family. The evergreen shrub is small and plump with oval leaves, yellow green flowers and small red orange fruits. Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) is an exotic herb that is native to India, but this herb can also be found in the arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa. Today however, it is also grown in mild climates including the US. The herb is known by several names: Winter Cherry, Poison Gooseberry and Indian Ginseng. This last tag name was given to ashwagandha on account of its powerful nutrients and amazing health benefits. However, ashwagandha and ginseng are botanically unrelated. Ashwagandha, which is typically derived from the roots and leaves of the plant, has been used in ayurvedic medicine for over 4,000 years. The ancients have utilised this herb to treat a very wide variety of conditions such as an energiser, rejuvenating tonic, sedative, anti-inflammatory agent and many more. Because of this, they also considered it a “magical herb.” Ashwagandha is best known for its restorative effects and nourishing nature. Traditionally, this “rejuvenative” herb is prescribed to people who are recovering from illnesses.

What are its nutritional content and health benefits?

In Sanskrit, the literal translation of the name “ashwagandha” is “the smell of a horse.”, an ayurvedic medicine term used to stress that the herb provides the strength, energy and even virility of a stallion. The ancients have learned of the many health benefits of consuming ashwagandha, however, further research is still needed in order to prove and confirm its efficacy in the areas, mentioned below;

Relieves stress and helps overcome depression. Ashwagandha has the capacity to help you battle stress, whether physical, mental, emotional or electro-magnetical and even fight depression. How? Withanolides, the active ingredient found in ashwagandha, holds back high levels of cortisol (stress hormone) and helps the body manage everyday stress. It must, indeed, be very potent as it is used in both anti-depressant drugs and tranquilizers.

Boosts energy but still makes you sleep soundly at night. Ashwagandha is a powerful adaptogen which helps a person sustain vitality and energy all throughout the day. However, unlike stimulants, it does not disrupt sleeping patterns. In fact, it even helps reduce risk of anxiety, insomnia-though promotes calmness, and a sound peaceful sleep.

Strengthens the immune system. Animal studies have shown a significant increase in white blood cells after the administration of ashwagandha. It is believed the thing responsible for the increase is the sitoindosides contained in ashwagandha which helped strengthen the immune system.

Detoxifies the body and improves memory function. There is an abundant amount of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals in ashwagandha that works together to improve one’s health. Ingesting ashwagandha enhances phagocyte action—it absorbs waste materials and toxins in the bloodstream and effectively eliminates them from the body.

There are still many health benefits that ashwagandha can provide—promotion of the proper function of the thyroid, restoration of male fertility, increase sexual performance, treatment of dementia and other degenerative brain disorders and so much more.
