What is it?

Shatavari is an herb of the asparagus family grown for its shoots. In fact, it looks akin to asparagus, only shatavari grows well underground. The shatavari plant is a climber—it has a thin, woody stem but with needle-like leaves, small white flowers and an extraordinary mass of long, fleshy roots. The taste of the roots of shatavari is sweet and mildly bitter. Shatavari can be found growing in humid Indian subcontinent jungles and Sri Lanka, where it is endemic. However, it also grows in the foothills of Nepal and the Himalayas, making it a truly versatile plant species. Also called “vrishya,” “shatuli,” and “wild asparagus,” shatavari has been used for more than 5,000 years as a female reproductive tonic. In fact, the name shatavari has been derived from the Sanskrit word which means “she who possesses a hundred husbands.” The ancients believe it can cure infertility, decreased libido and can even balance the acidity in the cervical area.

What are its nutritional content and health benefits?

Studies about shatavari benefits are limited for now. Nevertheless, some of the health benefits of ingesting shatavari are backed by scientific evidence.

Shatavari roots have been found to have the steroidal saponin called “shatavarins” and steroidal glycosides and B-sitosterol which help a woman’s fertility. Compared to synthetic fertility drugs, the hormone-like effect of shatavari on the reproductive system has no reported toxic side effects even with long term use.
Some laboratory studies have shown that shatavari has the capacity to inhibit the growth of tumors.

Shatavari also contains analgesic compounds such as triterpene and saponin which may help relieving the pain. Clinical analysis of shatavari during chemical-stimulated coughs in animals also showed methanolic roots extracts such as those from shatavari can alleviate bronchitis, coughs and other throat infections.
Other shatavari benefits may include aiding diarrhea, hyperacidity and stomach ulcers, boosting the immune system, reducing blood glucose, strengthening the heart, relieving stress-related disorders. However, studies on these are still limited and need further research.

What makes our shatavari powder different?

It is quite rare to find fresh shatavari roots. Good thing there are shatavari products such as organic shatavari tablet and shatavari powder which the whole world can enjoy. However, according to ayurvedic medicine, we can benefit from the powder form better because actual tasting starts up the digestive process of the body.

There is a current shortage of shatavari crops. But shortage or no shortage, we sustainably grow and harvest our shatavrari, waiting for 18 months so they could fully mature. Harvesting the roots is no small task either because each plant must be dug out carefully to prevent damaging the roots. Not all the roots are removed though so the remaining ones can regenerate.
Impact Foods believe a true health product must be free of chemicals from the soil where the crops are grown, the crops itself and during the processing of the product. Our shatavari plants are grown in fertile soils that are free of contaminants and chemicals. No pesticides, herbicides or fungicides were used while they were growing. We have soil certification and the approval of EU organic certification bodies to back up this claim. This way, you can be sure our product is not tainted with harmful chemicals.
