What is it?

Called “ling zhi” in Chinese, reishi is actually a fungus that is woody and tough. It has a brown-purplish colour with brown spores, long stalk and a cap that is fan-like in shape. Its outer appearance is shiny like it has been coated with varnish. There are six varieties of reishi mushroom which are classified according to colour. There is: red reishi (akashiba), blue reishi (aoshiba), purple reishi (murasakishiba), black reishi (kuroshiba), yellow reishi (kishiba) and white reishi (shiroshiba). Of these, it is the red one that’s believed to be the most potent. Thus, red reishi is the most commonly used variety by herbalists. The history of reishi mushrooms is quite long, having existed for over 4,000 years. In traditional Chinese medicine, reishi has been used to treat a wide variety of afflictions such as fatigue, respiratory problems and liver disease. You will see this herbal mushroom growing on tree stumps and decaying wood, mostly on plum and oak trees. It is endemic in Japan, China and some areas in Asia where they grow wild in the forests. But finding them this way is hard because reishi mushroom is very rare. Because of this, only ancient Chinese and Japanese royalty consumed this mushroom.

What are its nutritional content and health benefits?

The ancients believed in the potency of reishi mushroom, but there are skeptics who think it is all mumbo-jumbo. However, laboratory studies and research on its nutritional content and health benefits cannot be contested.

It has been shown through research that reishi mushrooms contain Copper, zinc, selenium that are involved in various biochemical processes supporting life. These trace minerals are involved ultimately in destruction of free radicals such as superoxide. Effective removal of these superoxide free radicals maintains the integrity of membranes, lows the risk of cancer, slows the aging process and above all, strengthening the immune system of the body and making it more capable of fighting off diseases.

A physician working in Europe in the early 1900s, Hakuro Hashimoto was the first autoimmune disease to be recognized in the scientific literature. One of Hashimoto's study estimated that one in five people suffer from an autoimmune disease with the numbers growing. Women are more likely than men to develop an autoimmune disease, and it is believed that 75% of individuals with an autoimmune disease are female, and one of them is Thyroid autoimmune disease.

Food is like the information in the body, and food that shines for overall information is mushrooms. There are various of mushrooms that people eat and admire today, some medicinal mushroom may have indirect and benefits for the whole body and some distinct health benefits for the thyroid directly and that is Reishi Mushroom - that contains Selenium, a powerful mineral that contributes to normalizing thyroid function.
