What is it?

The Camu camu berry is almost the same size as lemons but fleshy and soft. Its skin colour ranges from reddish brown to dark purple depending on the concentration of natural pigments (anthocyanin) in its skin. The flesh is yellow and it tastes really sour. This Amazonian berry doesn’t just grow anywhere but it is commonly found in the rainforest swamps and flooded areas of Peru and Bolivia. Its watery habitat indicates it may have been food for fish and also its main channel of dispersion. Abundant as they are in South America, no evidence suggests the locals were aware of its true power as a food and medicine. It was only in the 1950s when the Ministry of Public Health of Peru analysed its nutritional content that its value was known.

What are its nutritional content and health benefits?

Analysis showed camu camu berry has the highest concentration of Vitamin C than any known plant in the world. Yes, even more than oranges. If an orange can offer 1,000ppm of Vitamin C—and that is already high—camu berry can provide as high as 50,000ppm! That’s about two grams of Vitamin C for every 100 grams of fruit

What does Vitamin C do for the body? The list is long. It helps form collagen, blood vessels, teeth, skin, gums, cartilage and bones. An anti-oxidant that prevents DNA from being damaged by free radicals. Also, known to contribute increase of iron absorption, regineration of Vitamin E, heps normal function of the immune system and reduces tiredness and fatigue.

A person with an unhealthy nervous system may experience depression, brain fog (inability to focus sharply), forgetfulness and ultimately, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and otsome degenerative diseases. This same vitamin can protect the nervous system from damage thus avoiding diseases mentioned above.

Take note that unlike synthetic Vitamin C supplements which provide only ascorbic acid, camu berry offers a unique combination of natural minerals and nutrients which other supplements do not have.

It’s only recently that people are getting to know this fruit more so research on camu berries is still limited. But the potential it has shown as far as initial studies are concerned is immense.

What makes our camu camu powder different?

The basic premise of Impact Foods is to provide health food products, like camu camu powder, that would not just meet our client’s expectations but exceed it. But we can only do that if we focus our skills in every stage of camu berry growing and production.
Our camu camu plants are grown and cultivated in Peru where it is endemic. It is a naturally resilient crop to grow and can adapt well to its environment. It is also very prolific, producing as much as 12,000 kilograms of fruits per hectare in the wild.
These attributes make growing organic camu berries easy. We use no soil fertilisers as the ground is already naturally fertile; we don’t need chemicals to make the plants flower and bear fruits; and since camu plants are inherently tough, we don’t have to use pesticides on them. We have soil certification and the approval of EU organic certification bodies to prove that our organic camu camu powder is free of chemicals that can negatively affect our product.

The time between harvesting and processing any Vitamin C-rich fruit is very, very crucial. This short span of time will determine how much nutrients will be retained in the final product. To address this, we carefully pick mature fruits, making sure not to expose the fruits to temperatures exceeding 45°C. The fruits are immediately placed in coolers so as not to lose their nutritional value.

Every fruit undergoes strict inspection. Camu berries chosen for processing are carefully washed by hand, peeled and juiced. Then, the pulped fruit is put in a custom-designed dehydrator and the most advanced dehydrating process is used to slowly remove the fruit’s moisture content—again, at temperatures below 45°C.

Finally, the dried camu berries will be milled into a fine powder. No additives, food colour or preservatives of any kind are added into it. To be absolutely sure the powder is free of microbes and other harmful bacteria, it will be subject to meticulous testing before being packed. Thus, the need for heat sterilisation is eliminated and only the purest organic raw camu camu powder is received by our clients.
